Tennis Picks up 5-2 Win at Concordia (Neb.)

SEWARD, Neb. – Fort Hays State Women's Tennis improved to 13-7 overall for the season with a 5-2 win at Concordia University (Neb.) on Friday (Apr. 18). The Tigers won two of three doubles matches for their first team point and then won four of six singles matches. Concordia moved to 14-4 overall for the season.

Irina Alfonso and Suzana Faucz won their 21st doubles match of the season, which now ties them for the FHSU career record for doubles wins by a duo. Impressively they have done it all in one season and still have a chance to take the record outright with matches ahead next week. They won the No. 2 match 6-2, while the No. 3 team of Ines Latorre and Yone Pereiro also won 6-2 to secure the team point in doubles. The No. 1 team of Shreethika Vangala and Janae Montoya fell 6-2.

All of Fort Hays State's wins in singles were in straight sets. Alfonso won the No. 2 match 6-3, 6-0, while Faucz won the No. 3 match 6-2, 6-0. Bethan Gill blanked her opponent at No. 5 6-0, 6-0, while Grace Unruh won her No. 6 match 6-2, 6-0. Vangala fell in the No. 1 match 6-4, 6-0, while Pereiro went to three sets in her No. 4 match, but came up on the short end of a 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) result.

Fort Hays State has a pair of conference matches on the road next week at Central Oklahoma (Fri. Apr. 25) and Newman (Sat. Apr. 26).
