PUEBLO, Colo. – Fort Hays State Tennis split its pair of matches in Colorado for the weekend (Sept. 12-13), starting the season 1-1 in dual action. The Tigers fell to Colorado Mesa by a score of 6-1 on Friday, but bounced back for a 5-2 win over CSU Pueblo on Saturday.
Colorado Mesa 6, Fort Hays State 1
Molly Gaddis accounted for Fort Hays State's one point against Colorado Mesa by winning her No. 2 singles match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
The Tigers scored at least two points in all three of their doubles matches. Gaddis and
Janae Montoya had the closest match at No. 1, falling 6-3.
The Tigers were close to making the result much tighter as
Yone Pereiro (No. 1) and
Bethan Gill (No. 3) took their opponents to three sets. Gill lost by just two in the tiebreaking set (10-8), while Pereiro lost 7-3 in the tiebreaking set.
Ines Latorre (No. 4), Montoya (No. 5), and
Aggeliki Efthimiou (No. 6) all dropped singles matches in straight sets.
Ines Steeman won her exhibition singles match.
Fort Hays State 5, CSU Pueblo 2
The Tigers swept doubles play for their first team point, then won the No. 1-4 singles matches to clinch a win over the hometown Thunderwolves.
To open the day,
Ines Latorre and
Yone Pereiro (No. 2) won their doubles contest 6-1, while the No. 3 team of
Bethan Gill and
Ines Steeman won 6-3. The No. 1 match was very competitive with
Janae Montoya and
Molly Gaddis pulling out a 7-6 win by winning the tiebreak 7-3.
Pereiro (No. 1), Gaddis (No. 2), Gill (No. 3), and Latorre (No. 4) all won their singles matches in straight sets. Latorre blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Pereiro won 6-2, 6-3, and Gaddis won 6-2, 6-4. Gill was consistent with a pair of 6-4 set wins. Montoya (No. 5) and
Aggeliki Efthimiou (No. 6) both fell in straight sets. Efthimiou won six games in her match, while Montoya won five.
Ines Steeman also picked up her second exhibition win of the weekend.
Fort Hays State is set to play its first home match on Tuesday (Sept. 16) at 3 p.m. against Bethel College.
