HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis fell to Bethel College by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at the FHSU Tennis Courts. The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches, but the Threshers stormed back with four singles wins that all went to a decisive third set. FHSU is now 1-2 overall on the season, while Bethel started its year 1-0.
The No. 2 doubles team of
Yone Pereiro and
Ines Latorre breezed through their match 6-1, but the No. 3 match was tight with the FHSU team of
Ines Steeman and
Bethan Gill ultimately winning the first team point with a 7-5 decision. The No. 1 team of
Janae Montoya and
Molly Gaddis fell 6-4.
The Tigers had to force a third set in five singles matches, but unfortunately won just one of those five. Latorre (No. 4) was the only Tiger to win a singles contest in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Aggeliki Efthimiou (No. 6) was the other victorious Tiger in singles, winning 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
At No. 1 singles, Pereiro fell in her third tiebreak by a narrow 11-9 count. Gill fell 10-7 in the third set breaker of her No. 3 match. Gaddis (No. 2) and Montoya (No. 5) each fell in their third set breakers 10-6.
Ines Steeman won an exhibition singles match 6-3, while
Ines Latorre did the same after getting done with her match that counted toward the team score.
Fort Hays State now preps for the ITA Fall Central Regional held in Edmond, Okla. this weekend (Sept. 19-21). Next home action for FHSU will be on September 24 against Hastings College.
