LINDSBORG, Kan. – Three individuals on the Fort Hays State tennis team won their singles draws at the Bethany Invitational, held September 5-6. The Tigers won three of the four singles draws made for the tournament. Champions were
Ines Latorre,
Janae Montoya, and
Ines Steeman.
Latorre won the "B" Draw of the tournament with three straight wins. She posted 8-3 wins over Rylee Frye of Kansas Wesleyan and Kathryn Johnson of Doane before meeting fellow Tiger
Bethan Gill in the final. The Tiger teammates played a competitive match which Latorre won 9-7.
Montoya topped the "C" Draw with three straight wins as well. She breezed past Ania Bonner of Kansas Wesleyan 8-1 and then Alejandra Prat of Doane 8-3 before winning 8-5 in the championship match against Makenna Russom of Bethany.
Steeman ran through the "D" Draw with a 3-0 record. She won 8-2 over Adah Branam of Tabor and 8-5 over Grace Schroller of Doane before defeating Isabella Castillero of Doane 8-3 in the championship match.
The Tigers had a pair of second place finishers in
Yone Pereiro and the aforementioned
Bethan Gill. Both went 2-1 overall. Pereiro reached the championship of the "A" Draw, but Maria Christina Purizaca of Doane was all that kept FHSU from making a clean sweep of winning all four singles draws.
Third-place finishers for the Tigers included
Molly Gaddis in the "A" Draw, who fell to Purizaca in the semifinals before winning her third-place match, and Aggeliki Efthymiou in the "C" Draw. Both went 2-1 for the tournament as well.
