Student-Athletes and Donors Get First Look at Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex

HAYS, KS – Construction is complete on the new 20,000-square foot multifunctional Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex, located within the south confines of Lewis Field Stadium on the campus of Fort Hays State University. The $11.5 million project began in 2024. The facility, which features two floors, will be a great resource designed to elevate training, performance, and recovery for all Fort Hays State University student-athletes.

On Tuesday (Feb. 17), FHSU student-athletes from all sports received a first look at the new facility they will soon begin to utilize. Smiles and awe amongst their faces were a common sight during their tour. Two days later on Thursday (Feb. 19), the generous donors and FHSU Athletics Difference Makers received their first look at the impressive facility, and the reactions were the same.

"As we look at the future of Tiger Athletics, what unites us is our collective commitment to excellence, ensuring that all our student-athletes have access to the very best resources to learn, train, and compete – the Bickle Schmidt Athletic Complex reflects that commitment," said FHSU Athletic Director, Dr. Lisa Goddard McGuirk. "We are so appreciative of the unwavering support and generosity of our many dedicated donors, who represent immense Tiger pride, tradition, and a continued commitment to excellence. Their tremendous support enhances and elevates the student-athlete experience here at Fort Hays State University."

The lower level of the building features a state-of-the art athletic training/sports medicine area, including hydrotherapy pools, advanced recovery and treatment areas, and equipment designed to promote faster healing and rehabilitation. It also features a new locker room for the Tiger football team suited for 130 student-athletes.

The upper level of the building provides meeting rooms, a dedicated student-athlete lounge, recovery stations, and an entertaining kitchen-like space for all athletic programs to utilize, helping cultivate connection through team-building experiences. Another prime feature is an impressive 130-seat, theater-style film room, which can be utilized by all teams, thoughtfully designed to also provide premier sightlines of Lewis Field Stadium and the south end of the Fort Hays State University campus when retracting the light-canceling shades at the front of the room. The upper level will also house several offices of coaches.

Keep an eye on fhsuathletics.com and the @fhsuathletics social channels (Facebook, Instagram, X) in the coming days as more content featuring the new facility will be released.
