Â
Fort Hays State is the only school out of the bunch that managed to play during the opening weekend of the season, with the Tigers going 2-1 at UCCS. Last week's winter storm wiped out the first week of games for all three Arkansas programs.
Â
The Tigers lead the conference with a team batting average of .390 and a slugging percentage of .648. FHSU pitchers struck out 20 batters against UCCS, tied for fourth-most in the league.
Â
Derek Woolwine led the Tigers offensively last week, batting .833 with a slugging percentage of 1.917 after racking up four doubles, three home runs, seven runs, 10 RBI and 23 total bases. The senior first baseman homered in all three games against the Mountain Lions and finished the weekend leading Division II in doubles and total bases.
Woolwine is one of nine Tigers with multiple hits this season, including seven that average at least one hit per contest.
Â
Brandon Chavez struck out a team-high six batters in his first outing, allowing just four hits over 5.0 innings of work.
Aaron Boutz tossed a pair of scoreless, hitless innings in his Tiger debut, while
Brett Jacobs struck out four and allowed just two runs in his first start of the season.
Â
FHSU is 0-3 all-time against Ouachita Baptist, dropping all three games on the road in a 2008 series. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Tigers and both Henderson State and Harding.
Â
Ouachita Baptist was picked sixth in the GAC Preseason Coaches Poll after finishing last season 24-25 overall and 20-13 in conference play. Starting pitcher Chase Oberle was a second team D2 Baseball Preseason All-American after striking out 97 batters in 92.1 innings of work.
Â
Henderson State is ranked fourth in the GAC Preseason Coaches Poll after reaching the Central Regional last season with a record of 32-24. The Reddies feature 34 newcomers after returning just one starting position player and one starting pitcher.
Â
Harding was listed second in the GAC Preseason Poll after turning in a record of 41-19 in 2025. The Bisons won last season's GAC Championship Tournament to advance to the Central Regional. Logan Lacey is a first team NCBWA Preseason All-American after totaling 19 home runs, 70 runs and 58 RBI last season.
Â
Looking ahead, the Tigers will host Colorado School of Mines for the 2026 home opener on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14). First pitch in the non-conference doubleheader is set for noon from Larks Park.
