Tigers Split Home Doubleheader with Bulldogs

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State is now 10-9 overall on the season after a doubleheader split with Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday (Mar. 10). The Bulldogs took the first contest 9-0 in five innings, but the Tigers bounced back for a 7-3 win in the second contest. SWOSU is now 5-19 overall for the season.

Game 1: Southwestern Oklahoma State 9, Fort Hays State 0 (5 inn.)
Fort Hays State had a tough time solving SWOSU starter Alexis Taylor in the first contest. Taylor threw a complete game with just three hits allowed, while striking out seven. Hannah Green had two of the three Tiger hits in the game, while stealing three bases.

Southwestern Oklahoma scored single runs in the first and second innings, then blew the game open with four in the fourth and five in the third.

Solana Carpenter threw the first 3.2 innings for FHSU and allowed six runs. She struck out three. Korryn Johnson pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed three runs (one earned). She struck out one.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 7, Southwestern Oklahoma State 3
A power surge by Lilly Mohr helped the Tigers get past the Bulldogs in game two of the doubleheader. The Tigers were down 3-1 when Mohr tied the game with a 2-run home run to right-center field in the fourth inning. In her next at bat in the fifth, she hit a 3-run blast to left field extending a Tiger lead out to 7-3.

Abbey Duarte helped her own cause in the pitching circle by driving in the other two runs for the Tigers. Her first was in the first inning to help FHSU cut a SWOSU lead in half to 2-1. Then she had the go-ahead RBI single in the fifth to make it 4-3 FHSU before Mohr's blast two batters later. Hannah Green also produced her second two-hit game of the afternoon.

Duarte pitched a complete game for the Tigers, scattering eight hits with three runs allowed. She moved to 2-0 on the season with the win. Blaire Gentry took the loss for SWOSU in 4.2 innings of work. Only three of the runs she allowed were earned. Lily Barfield pitched the final 1.1 innings for SWOSU.
