HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis fell in its first MIAA contest of the season by a count of 7-0 to Northwest Missouri State on Friday (Mar. 27) at the FHSU Tennis Courts. The Tigers saw their seven-match win streak snapped and moved to 8-3 overall, 0-1 in the MIAA. The Bearcats improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.
The Bearcats swept doubles play and won all singles matches in straight sets. The Bearcats ran their overall win streak to nine straight matches.
The closest doubles contest by score was the No. 2 match of
Molly Gaddis and
Ines Latorre against Polina Gontaryk and Majra Djokic, a 6-3 result. The No. 1 team of
Bethan Gill and
Diana Souza were also competitive, but fell 6-2. The No. 3 team of
Janae Montoya and
Ines Steeman fell 6-0.
Gill (No. 1) and Latorre (No. 3) put up a strong fight in singles action. Gill fell 6-2, 6-4 to Miru Nonaka, one of the top 10 singles players in the region, while Latorre fell 6-4, 6-2 to Chiharu Ito. Gaddis had a strong first set at No. 2 against Djokic, but fell 6-4, 6-0. Montoya fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Steeman fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5, and Souza fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.
Fort Hays State's match with Missouri Western, scheduled for Saturday (Mar. 27), has been postponed to a later date due to wind conditions forecasted for Hays.
