EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis fell in conference action to Emporia State on Thursday afternoon (Apr. 2). The Hornets took the match 6-1, but
Ines Steeman was victorious for the Tigers in singles action. FHSU is now 8-4 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA, while ESU moved to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA.
The Hornets swept doubles play for the first team point of the day. However, the Tigers were competitive in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. The No. 2 team of
Molly Gaddis and
Ines Latorre and the No. 3 team of
Janae Montoya and Steeman each fell by scores of 6-4. The No. 1 team of
Bethan Gill and
Diana Souza fell 6-0.
Steeman won her singles match at the No. 5 position in straight sets. She defeated Giulia Russu 6-4 and 7-6 (8-6) to secure FHSU's only team point of the day. All other Tigers fell in straight sets.
Gaddis won the most games within her singles match at No. 2 by scores of 6-3, 6-4. Montoya won five games, falling by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Latorre fell 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 position. Gill won three games within her match at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1) and Souza won two games in her match at No. 6 (6-0, 6-2).
The Tigers return to action next week with conference matches at Washburn, Arkansas-Fort Smith, and Northeastern State.
