FORT SMITH, Ark. – Fort Hays State Tennis fell 4-3 to Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday (Apr. 10). After the Tigers took the first team point of the matchup by taking two of three doubles matches, the Lions rallied to win four of six singles matches. UAFS won 4-3. FHSU moved to 8-7 overall and 0-5 in the MIAA, while the Lions moved to 3-11 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA.
The No. 2 doubles team of
Molly Gaddis and
Ines Latorre helped secure the first Tiger team point by taking their match 6-2. The No. 3 team of
Janae Montoya and
Ines Steeman won by default with UAFS not fielding a doubles team at the position.
Steeman picked up FHSU's second team point in singles play at the No. 5 position, winning in straight sets 7-6, 6-3.
Diana Souza scored a point for the Tigers with her win by default at No. 6 with no UAFS player available.
Bethan Gill (No. 2) and Latorre (No. 4) each won four games in the first set of singles action, but could not force a tiebreak set. Gill won seven games within her match, while Latorre won six. Gaddis (No. 1) and Montoya (No. 3) each won just one game in their singles contests.
The Tigers will be on the road for conference action again next week when they travel to Missouri Western on Friday, April 17 for a contest at 2 p.m.
