HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State fell to Washburn by a score of 13-5 on Tuesday (Apr. 14) at Larks Park. The Tigers and Ichabods were tied 1-1 through four innings, but the Ichabods pulled away from the fifth inning onward for the eight-run victory. FHSU moved to 12-27 overall and 9-20 in the MIAA, while Washburn went to 17-23 overall and 13-13 in the MIAA.
Washburn used seven home runs to get separation from FHSU, including two by Levi Risenhoover. The Ichabods outhit the Tigers 14-9. Ian Luce led Washburn with three hits.
Fort Hays State held an initial 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Derek Woolwine had an RBI double. Washburn tied the game with a run in the third and then took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth.
The Tigers added their second run in the seventh on an
Antonio Avila RBI. He added another on a single in the ninth, followed by RBIs from
Mac Bowie and
Derek Woolwine to cap the Tiger scoring. Avila and
Garretson Cook each had two hits in the game.
Aaron Boutz pitched the first 3.0 innings for FHSU and allowed one run.
Caleb Camp took the loss in relief, allowing three (no earned) in 1.1 innings.
Brett Jacobs pitched 2.0 innings,
Luke Berry went 0.2,
Evan Piwowarski went 0.2, and
Cody Bruss finished the game with 1.1 innings of work.
Fidel Hatch pitched the first 4.0 innings for Washburn and struck out five with one run allowed. Griffin Huiatt picked up a win in relief, also going 4.0 innings with four strikeouts and one run allowed. Sean Kingston pitched the final inning for Washburn and allowed three runs.
Fort Hays State returns to action at home this weekend with a three-game non-conference series with Colorado Christian University (Apr. 17-19).
