Ichabods Sweep Pair from Tigers in Hays

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State moved to 17-20 overall and 3-9 in the MIAA after dropping a pair of MIAA contests with Washburn on Friday (Apr. 3) at Fleharty Family Field. The Ichabods took the first game by run rule 12-1 before winning the second contest 6-0. Washburn improved to 28-15 overall for the season and 5-9 in the MIAA.
 
Game 1: Washburn 12, Fort Hays State 1
Washburn ran away with the first contest of the day with a pair of five run innings, leading 10-0 after three. They added another pair of runs in the fourth before the Tigers notched their only hit and run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. The Ichabods took the game in five innings, notching 14 hits.
 
An Abbey Duarte walk set up an RBI double by Lilly Mohr in the fourth for the Tigers only blemishes in the runs and hits column against Sadie Walker, who threw a complete game. Walker recorded two strikeouts for the Ichabods.
 
Korryn Johnson started for the Tigers in the circle and allowed five runs in 1.2 innings of work. Claire Kirby also surrendered five in 0.2 innings. Abbey Duarte pitched an inning and allowed two runs, while Myah Wolfe pitched 1.2 innings and did not allow any hits to the Ichabods.
 
Game 2: Washburn 6, Fort Hays State 0
Fort Hays State tallied a hit in each of the first four innings of the second contest, but could never find a way to push a run across. Washburn starter Jenna Sprague pitched a complete game shutout with five hits allowed and four strikeouts.
 
Washburn slowly pulled away with a run in the first, two in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the sixth. They had 13 hits, led by Dalaney Anderson with three knocks and three RBIs.
 
Solana Carpenter pitched a complete game for FHSU and one of the runs she allowed was unearned. She struck out one.
 
Abbey Duarte led the Tigers at the plate with two of the team's five hits in the game.
 
Fort Hays State returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 4), hosting Emporia State in an MIAA doubleheader at 1 p.m.
