Tigers Score Early but Fall to Hawks in Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. - Fort Hays State fell to Rockhurst on Sunday (Aug. 30) by a score of 3-1 in a neutral site match, wrapping up the first week of play. FHSU moved to 1-1 on the season, while Rockhurst moved to 1-0-1. The Tigers took an early lead, but Rockhurst led 2-1 by halftime and added an insurance goal late.

Fort Hays State started strong with Payton Porter scoring in the fifth minute, assisted by Chloe Rodriguez. Rockhurst cleared a ball from the box, but Rodriguez controlled it with her head over to Porter who delivered a brilliant strike from about 25 yards out.

Despite the early lead, the Hawks responded with goals from Bridget Herweck in the 27th minute and Jazmin Martinez Rangel in the 38th minute to flip the match in their favor. Caitlyn Smith gave the Hawks breathing room in the 80th minute with the third goal.

The Hawks led the shot count 14-7. Katie Stoskopf made six saves throughout the match for FHSU, while Rockhurst keeper Sydney Schnarr made five.

Looking ahead, Fort Hays State heads to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday (Sept. 5) for a 5 p.m. in Alva, Oklahoma.
