Hillcats Take MIAA Opener Over Tigers in Claremore

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Fort Hays State fell to Rogers State 3-0 on Friday evening (Sept. 18). The Tigers generated 12 shots, including eight in the second half, but a pair of second half goals by the Hillcats put a result out of reach. FHSU moved to 2-3-1 overall for the season, while RSU went to 3-1-2 overall.

Rogers State took an early 1-0 lead when Bella Holland converted a penalty kick at 8:58. RSU outshot FHSU 7-4 in the first half and took the one-goal lead into halftime. Katie Stoskopf made four first-half saves for FHSU and eventually finished with five for the match.

The Tigers nearly leveled the match just over six minutes after halftime when Isabelle Mull hit the post with a shot that unfortunately deflected back into the field of play instead of over the goal line. But, just about two minutes after the flurry of FHSU pressure, Rogers State scored its second goal off a scramble situation in the box. The Tigers made a team save on the first shot heading for the net, but Khari Carreno put a strike off the rebound the Tigers could not stop. Taylor Mendez went on to net a third goal for the Hillcats in the 68th minute.

Calais Butts recorded a shutout in goal for the Hillcats, making four saves. RSU held a slight shot advantage for the match at 14-12.

Up next, Fort Hays State travels to Emporia, Kan., to face Emporia State on Sunday (Sept. 20) at 1 p.m.
