Lance Russell has been named Athlete of the Week for his performance with the men's basketball team last week. In their only action of the week, the Tigers lost to Newman, 80-78, at Newman in Wichita. FHSU is 2-2 on the season and has dropped back-to-back games.
Russell, a senior from Wichita, Kan., scored a career-high 23 points in the loss to Newman. Playing in his hometown, Russell shot 8-of-13 from the field and was 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Russell grapped seven rebounds and made one steal in 35 minutes.
Russell was one of three Tigers in double figures as Craig Nicholson and Dwayne Brunson scored 20 and 27, respectively. Brunson had a game-high 15 rebounds for a double-double.
On the season, Russell is second on the team in points and rebounds, averaging 13.5 points and 6.3 rebounds. He is shooting 60.6 percent from the field, including 50 percent from 3-point range. The senior has started all four games and averages 27.8 minutes per game, second most on the team.
The 2-2 Tigers continue its non-conference slate with a home game Wednesday (Nov. 28) against Central Christian at 7 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
