Following a first half which saw them shoot less than 20% from the field, the Fort Hays State women's basketball team came alive in the second half to put away Tabor College 81-58 and move to 2-0 on the year.
FHSU was 7-of-36 (19.4%) from the field and 3-of-22 (13.6%) from the field in the first half compared to 47.4% for Tabor, which was only able to get 19 shots off. After trailiing 29-27 at the break, FHSU came out hot in the second half, shooting over 50% from the field and 40% from deep to put the Blue Jays away. The Tigers outscored Tabor 54-29 after the break.
The Tigers defense forced Tabor into 34 turnovers in the game, including 24 steals. Kaniesha Pettaway recorded a team-high six steals while Kelsie Sorenson had five. For the second game in a row, Janel Durler anchored the Tigers defense with five blocked shots.
Leading the offense for FHSU was Kara McFarland with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. McFarland had a steady line all the way across with two rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in 16 minutes. Shelby Hillman and Talia Miller each chipped in 11 points, while Crista Bechard had 10 to go along with five assists.
Fort Hays State hosts rival Nebraska-Kearney at home on Saturday (Nov. 20) at 2:00 pm.
