The Fort Hays State women's basketball team is headed to face Northwest Missouri State on Saturday (Dec. 18) to finish off a three-game conference road trip. FHSU has a 5-3 record so far, but the Lady Tigers are 0-3 in road games following losses against Washburn and Missouri Western in the past two games.
Northwest Missouri State comes into the game with a 6-2 record, including 2-2 in the MIAA. The only losses for the Bearcats, who were picked fourth in the MIAA preseason coaches poll, were at nationally-ranked Washburn and Emporia State. Abby Henry leads the MIAA in scoring, averaging 20.0 points per game and she is one of four Bearcats who ranks in the top 11 in the conference in scoring. Kyla Roehrig averages a double-double of 14.5 points and 10.9 rebounds per game for Northwest.
Senior forward
Kara Champlin has been in the starting lineup for the Lady Tigers the past three games after coming off the bench the first four. Since being inserted into the starting lineup, Champlin has produced two of her best games as a Tiger, scoring a career-high 15 points against Nebraska-Omaha and then matching it at Missouri Western. She leads the team in field-goal percentage, making 69% (29-of-42) of her attempts this year and is also the Lady Tigers' leader in rebounding with 5.4 per game. Champlin is now tied with
Rhys Pihl as the team's second-leading scorer, each averaging 9.1 points per game.
Junior
Kimber Weiser has been playing well for the Lady Tigers and was rewarded with a start at Missouri Western. She struggled in the first start of her FHSU career, scoring eight points on 2-of-16 shooting. It was her lowest scoring output since notching five points in the second game of the year against Tabor College. Prior to the Missouri Western game, Weiser scored 10+ points in the last five games, including 20+ points in two of those games. No other player has had a 20-point game this season for FHSU. Weiser is still leading the team in scoring, averaging 11.1 points per game, shooting 36.0% (32-of-89) from the field and 72.0% (18-of-25) from the free-throw line.
Coach
Tony Hobson used his fourth different starting lineup of the season against Missouri Western on Saturday. He rewarded Weiser for her offensive contributions in the past few games by starting her in place of
Kara McFarland. She joined
Kara Champlin, who has started the past three games, and the three Lady Tigers who have started every game this year: guards
Crista Bechard and
Kaniesha Pettaway and forward
Kelsie Sorenson.
The Lady Tigers get a break of more than two weeks following the game to enjoy the holiday season. They will be back in action on Monday (Jan. 3) to host Truman at 5:30 pm in their first game of 2011.
