The Fort Hays State women's basketball team (6-7, 3-6 MIAA) is coming off a pair of road losses over the weekend at Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern. They now return home for a pair of games, starting with a visit from Pittsburg State (6-7, 4-5 MIAA) on Saturday (Jan. 15).
The in-state battle between Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State dates back to the 1974-75 season, with FHSU owning a 22-17 all-time record against the Gorillas. Since joining the MIAA, FHSU is 3-5 against Pittsburg State, including losses in the last two games at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Pitt State won both meetings with the Lady Tigers last season, winning 71-65 in Pittsburg and 78-74 in Hays. The last victory for FHSU against PSU was an 83-64 decision in Pittsburg on February 26. 2009.
Fort Hays State is 6-1 in games at Gross Memorial Coliseum this season, including 3-1 in conference home games. The lone loss was a 54-45 decision to Truman. In his 2+ years as head coach,
Tony Hobson is 25-11 in home games, but his teams have a road record of just 6-22, with five of those wins coming last season.
Kara Champlin continues to be a force for the Lady Tigers in the post, leading the team in scoring (9.6 points per game) and rebounding (5.9 rebounds per game). Her field goal percentage of 61.3% (49-for-80) is also the best on the team and she is one of five players for FHSU averaging at least one steal per game.
Kimber Weiser has rebounded from a short slump to lead the Lady Tigers in scoring the past two games. Weiser led the Lady Tigers with 13 points against Southwest Baptist and 11 at Missouri Southern. She is the second-leading scorer for FHSU, averaging 9.2 points per game.
Kaniesha Pettaway put together one of her best all around performances as a Lady Tiger against Missouri Southern. She scored a season-high six points, hitting 2-3 shots from 3-point range, and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. Pettaway leads the team in assists (3.8/game) and steals (1.7/game) and is the third-leading rebounder on the team (4.2/game).
Pittsburg State comes to Hays one game ahead of the Lady Tigers in the MIAA standings. They recorded their biggest win of the season last Saturday, as they downed No. 8 Emporia State 68-60 in Pittsburg. The Gorillas, however, have struggled on the road, going just 1-5 to date. Pitt State is led in scoring by Drew Roberts, who is averaging 12.3 points per game, while Courtney Tate adds 10.2 points per contest. Kylee Baldetti leads the Gorillas in rebounding, averaging 7.2 boards per game.
