After tying the game at 1-1, the Tigers allowed two goals in the last 26 minutes, falling 3-1 to Northeastern State on Tuesday (Oct. 25) at the FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays.
With the loss, the Tigers are 5-11-1 on the season, while visiting NSU improves to 11-3-3.
Cindy Benitez, who was named the MIAA Soccer Student-Athlete of the Week today, tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick in the 59
th minute. The goal is her seven of the season and her fourth goal in the last three games.
The game stayed deadlocked for only five minutes, as the Riverhawks hit in a rebounded shot to take the 2-1 advantage in the 64
th minute. Rachel Sordahl put in the goal for the Riverhawks. NSU added one more goal in the 77
th minute on a 40-yard shot from Katie Valdez. The first Riverhawk goal came in the 20
th minute on an own goal.
Early in the game, the Tigers looked like they took the lead on a shot from
Joanne Glynn off a free kick from
Jamie Babyak; however, the play was called offside to keep the game scoreless early.
Despite being behind 1-0 at halftime, the Tigers held a 9-1 shot advantage in the game. For the whole 90 minutes of play, FHSU totaled 17 shots to 10 from NSU.
The Tigers finish off their regular season with a home finale on Saturday (Oct. 29) against Washburn at 6 p.m. at the FHSU Soccer Stadium. Although both teams are in the MIAA, the game is a non-conference matchup.
