Truman Snaps Lady Tigers' Five Game Win Streak

Box Score

The Fort Hays State women's basketball squad had its five-game win streak snapped at Truman on Thursday (Feb. 10) by a score of 65-53. The win gave Truman the regular season sweep over the Tigers, which could loom large at the end of the season for MIAA Tournament seeds. Fort Hays State is now 11-10 overall and 8-9 in the MIAA.

The Lady Tigers led by five points with 4:22 remaining in the first half, but Truman ended the opening frame on an 8-0 run to take a 28-25 halftime lead. The game remained tight in the second half until a conventional three-point play by Truman's Megan Sharpe with 7:21 remaining sparked a 12-0 run which proved too much for the Lady Tigers to overcome.

A game removed from dominating nationally ranked Washburn on the boards by 18 in an upset win in Hays, the Lady Tigers were outrebounded by 19 (47-28) on Thursday evening by Truman. Eighteen offensive rebounds for Truman led to 19 second-chance points, which were the difference in the game. Truman outscored FHSU in second-chance points 19-2.

Crista Bechard led FHSU in scoring with 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, which included two 3-point field goals. Kara Champlin had a solid night in the post with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting and went a perfect 3-of-3 at the free-throw line.

Jennifer Conway led Truman with a big double-double effort of 17 points and 13 rebounds. She did the majority of her damage at the free-throw line, going 9-of-10. Becka McHenry had 13 points and Nicole Gloor added 11.

With the loss at Truman, Saturday's game at Central Missouri becomes even bigger for FHSU. Fort Hays State and Central Missouri are currently tied for eighth in the conference standings. Only eight teams make the MIAA Tournament at the end of the year. A win for FHSU would give them the tiebreak over Central Missouri at the end of the year, since they defeated the Jennies earlier this year in Hays. Truman moved a half-game ahead of FHSU in the conference standings, but still has to make up a game at Washburn.

Fort Hays State tips off at Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo., on Saturday (Feb. 12) at 1:30 pm.
