The Fort Hays State women's basketball team returns home and will host Southwest Baptist for the annual WBCA Breast Cancer Awareness PINK game on Wednesday (Feb. 16) evening at 5:30 pm. The game is crucial for the Lady Tigers, who dropped consecutive road games over the weekend following their five-game winning streak.
The Lady Tigers are currently ninth in the MIAA standings with a 11-11 overall record, including 8-10 in conference games. Fort Hays State is one game behind Truman, Central Missouri and Missouri Western and will need to overtake one of these teams in the standings to qualify for the MIAA postseason tournament in Kansas City.
Traci Keyser has continued to shoot the ball well for the Lady Tigers, leading the MIAA in free throw percentage while ranking second in 3-point field goal percentage. She is also the team's leading scorer, averaging 10.9 points per game.
Crista Bechard has also been scoring the ball well lately for FHSU, putting up 10 or more points in eight straight games after doing so just twice in the first 14 games of the season. She is now averaging 10.7 points per game which is the second best mark on the team. Bechard and
Kaniesha Pettaway have started every game in the Lady Tiger backcourt, and they lead the team in minutes played, steals and assists.
Kara Champlin anchors the front court of the Lady Tigers, ranking third on the team in scoring with 8.0 points per game while leading the team with 6.3 rebounds per game. Her field goal percentage of 51.4% also leads the team and ranks sixth in the MIAA.
Ashleigh Gallio leads the way for the Bearcats, who defeated Fort Hays State 69-55 on January 8th in Bolivar. Gallio leads the team with 10.2 points and 4.0 assists per game. LaKendra Smith and Jacqui Zelenka are each averaging right around 9.0 points per game in addition for SBU. Whitney Malone is the leading rebounder for SBU, grabbing an average of 7.7 boards per game.
