Matchup With Defending Champs Awaits Lady Tigers

Game Notes  I  Watch Live  I  Listen Live  I  Live Stats

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team will play their final game of the 2010-11 season on Saturday (Feb. 26) when head to Emporia, Kan. to face the defending NCAA II National Champion Lady Hornets.

The Lady Tigers were mathematically eliminated from postseason play on Wednesday with a loss to Pittsburg State. The loss, coupled with a win by Truman against Lincoln, means that the best Fort Hays State can do is tie Truman for 8th place in the standings. However, the Bulldogs won both meetings against FHSU this season, so they will be playing in Kansas City next weekend.

Emporia State (17-8, 14-7 MIAA) has won 11 straight meetings against the Lady Tigers, including a 67-57 win in Hays back on January 19. Since that game, the Lady Hornets are just 5-5 and this week dropped out of the WBCA Top 25 poll for the first time this season. Alli Volkens leads Emporia State, averaging a double-double of 17.5 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. She had 24 points and 15 rebounds when the teams first met this season.

Fort Hays State (12-13, 9-12 MIAA) has relied heavily on Traci Keyser and Crista Bechard for points lately. Both players struggled shooting the ball at Pittsburg State, but Keyser still finished with 13 points and Bechard had 11. Keyser leads the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game while Bechard is second, averaging 10.9 points per contest. Keyser also ranks as the top free throw shooter in the MIAA, hitting 90.7% (78-of-86) of her attempts from the stripe.

Kimber Weiser broke out of a slump at Pitt State, scoring 17 points which included 3-for-5 shooting from long range and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. It was her highest scoring output in the last 11 games and the seventh time this season she led the team in scoring. For the season, Weiser is averaging 6.2 points per game, which ranks fifth on the team.

Kara Champlin pulled down 12 rebound at Pitt State, her third straight game with 10 or more boards. Included in that was her first career double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds against Southwest Baptist. In total, she has 35 rebounds in the past three games. Champlin leads the team and ranks in the top 10 in the MIAA in rebounding, averaging 7.0 per game.
