Softball Splits Sunday Games at MIAA Crossover Tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Tiger softball team split their games Sunday (Mar. 20) at the MIAA Crossover Tournament in Springfield, Mo. FHSU fell to Missouri Southern in its first game of the day 2-0, but then defeated Pittsburg State 2-1 to close out the tournament. Fort Hays State is now 10-8 overall.

A two-run home run by Missouri Southern's Dawn Grass in the fourth inning was the difference in the first game of the day for FHSU. The game was a pitcher's dual, pitting Nicole Reed of Missouri Southern against Maddie Holub of FHSU. Reed came out on the winning end with a complete game shutout, while Holub took the loss and dropped to 4-2 on the season.

Reed struck out nine for the Lions and allowed five hits and a walk. Holub had 10 strikeouts for the Tigers and allowed four hits and a walk. Reed retired eight straight from the start of the fifth inning before allowing her final hit to the Tigers in the seventh with two outs.

The Tigers engaged in another pitcher's dual in the final game of the weekend. Kayla Rupa struck out 11 Gorillas and allowed just three hits with no walks. She evened her season record at 6-6. Pittsburg State's Samantha Grove went 6.0 innings, scattering eight hits with two walks, while striking out four.

Fort Hays State took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a Malinee Powell RBI single, then extended it to 2-0 in the sixth on an Adriana Wortley RBI double.

The Tigers held off the PSU rally in the seventh allowing just one run. With one out, Pittsburg State's Kreslee Ketcham had a RBI double. She was stranded on second though, as Rupa induced a flyout to right field and a swinging strikeout to finish the game.
