Tigers Split Pair of One-Run Games Against Southwestern Oklahoma

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Fort Hays State softball team split a pair of one-run non-conference games at home on Tuesday (Apr. 12) against Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs pulled out a 3-2 victory in extra innings in game one under the international tiebreaker format, but the Tigers got a solid pitching effort from Kayla Rupa to win game two 2-1. Fort Hays State is now 20-18 overall.

Game 1: Southwestern Oklahoma State 3, FHSU 2 (8 inn.)

Box Score

Errors cost Fort Hays State the first contest of the day, as all three runs scored by Southwestern Oklahoma State were unearned. A throwing error in the first with two outs, that should have ended the inning, led to the first run for the Bulldogs.

The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by Maddie Holub and a RBI single by Malinee Powell. The Bulldogs tied the game back up in the fourth with a two out single. A dropped fly ball by the Tigers earlier in the inning led to that run.

The international tiebreaker format was used in extra innings as the Bulldogs used a sacrifice bunt and single to get the runner home from second. The Tigers however hurt themselves once again as their runner on second came too far off second on a grounder to the left side and she was thrown out trying to retreat to the base. The Tigers could not rally from that point.

Maddie Holub took the tough luck loss, throwing all eight innings. She allowed eight hits and walked two, while striking out eight. She moved to 8-7 on the season.

Game 2: FHSU 2, Southwestern Oklahoma State 1

Box Score

Kayla Rupa had a strong pitching performance in the second game of the doubleheader, throwing a no-hitter through 5.1 innings before a pair of singles in the sixth led to Southwestern Oklahoma State's only run of the game.

Britney Workman put the Tigers up 1-0 in the game with an RBI double high off the left center field wall in the fourth. Taylor Nelson's third home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth, proved to be the decisive run.

Rupa allowed just three hits in her complete game effort. She walked three and struck out six to move to 12-11 on the season.
