Softball Swept by Missouri Western at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Tiger softball team was just one out away from a win in game one, up 3-2, but the Missouri Western rallied with a pair of base hits to win 4-3, then went on to win the nightcap 7-3. The losses put Fort Hays State at 15-15 overall and 1-7 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Missouri Western 4, FHSU 3

Box Score

The Tigers looked on their way to victory in game one, but miscues in the seventh inning led to a comeback win for the Griffons. The Tigers took a 3-1 lead to the seventh. Missouri Western's first batter of the inning had a single, but the next batter flied out.

The chaos started with the next batter being hit by a pitch. A wild pitch then advanced the runners up to second and third. A fielding error on a grounder by the batter allowed one run to cross the plate and put runners at first and third with the score now 3-2 and still just one out.

After a stolen base by Brittany Douglas of MWSU put runners at second and third again, Douglas looked to give FHSU the gift it needed by interfering with FHSU shortstop Danie Brinkmann on a grounder by the next batter. It made the run MWSU had supposedly scored to tie the game come back to third with two outs.

The Griffons found a way to tie the game though on liner back up the middle that pitcher Kayla Rupa deflected but couldn't stop. With runners at first and second, Blair Stalder got the big single to right field that gave the Griffons the go-ahead run. That would stand up in the seventh as the Tigers could not push a run across with runners at first and second with just one out.

Kayla Rupa took the tough luck loss, now 8-10 on the season. She allowed seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

For offense, Maddie Holub had a solo home run in the first inning. In the second, the Tigers scored on a wild pitch and Sara Tani had an RBI double.

Game 2: Missouri Western 7, FHSU 3

Box Score

The Tigers fell deep in a hole early and could not climb out in a 7-3 loss in the nightcap. Missouri Western scored two in the first on a wild pitch and walk with the bases loaded. The Griffons broke the game open in the fourth with four runs to make it 6-0. Brittany Douglas hit a three-run homer for the Griffons in that frame.

The Griffons added another run in the fifth before the Tigers finally rallied for three in the bottom of the inning. Kayla Rupa had a two-RBI double, followed by an RBI double from Britney Workman. However, the Tigers squandered several chances at the plate in the game for more runs, leaving 13 runners on base in the game. They had the bases loaded in the third and fourth and could not push across runs.

Maddie Holub took the loss, now 7-5 on the season. She allowed 11 hits and four walks, while striking out six. Six of the seven runs she allowed were earned.
