Defense Key as Lady Tigers Drop Northwest Missouri State

Box Score

The Fort Hays State women's basketball won in Maryville, Mo., for the first time in school history Saturday (Jan. 28), defeating Northwest Missouri State 65-42 on the MIAA Network's Game of the Week. The win snaps a three-game losing skid for the Lady Tigers, who held the Bearcats to less than 30% shooting from the field.

Fort Hays State had a very balanced offensive effort, with five players scoring 10 or more points. Kate Lehman had another strong performance in the post and posted her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also blocked another five shots in the game, giving her 61 for the season, just three shy of tying the single-season school record. Lehman did most of her damage at the free throw line, converting on 8-of-11 shots from the stripe after struggling from the line in the Tigers last outing.

Kimber Weiser came off the bench to score 12 points, including nine in the first half to help FHSU get out to a 33-23 lead at the break. Weiser also tied a season-highs with seven rebounds and three steals. Katelyn Edwards recorded her first double-double in four games and her sixth of the season with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Crista Bechard hit three timely three pointers and finished with 11 points while Kaiameka Brown hit a pair of threes of her own and finished with 10.

The Lady Tigers connected on 21-of 56 (37.5%) field goal attempts and 10-of-29 (34.5) from long range while holding the Bearcats to less than 30% in both categories. FHSU held the Bearcats to a season-low 42 points, which is also the lowest output the Lady Tigers have held an MIAA opponent to this season. Fort Hays State also had a huge advantage on the glass, pulling down 65 rebounds to 38 for Northwest Missouri State.

The Bearcats, who fall who 4-16 (2-11 MIAA) with the loss, managed just one player in double figures after Ashley Thayer scored 11 points off the bench. Candace Boeh was the second leading scorer for Northwest with nine points while no other Bearcats managed more than six points.

Fort Hays State ended a three-game slide with the win and improved their record to 15-5 (7-5 MIAA) on the year. The 15 wins ties the highest mark for wins in a season under head coach Tony Hobson. The Lady Tigers have a day off before getting back in action on Monday night (Jan. 30) at Missouri Western. That game will begin at 5:30 pm from MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph, Mo.
