Box Score The Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a 19-2 run midway through the second half to pull away from Newman University, 66-46, at Gross Memorial Coliseum on Tuesday (Nov. 20). The Tigers improved to 4-0 with four home wins to start the season.
With a slim 39-36 lead with 10:47 left in the game, FHSU scored 19 of the next 21 points to open up a huge 20 point lead at 58-38. Forward
Tera Ingalsbe started the run with four of the six points.
Melissa Nelson then went on a personal run of 5-0 with a layup and 3-pointer for a 50-38 Tiger advantage.
Kate Lehman got in on the action with four points, and
Katelyn Edwards put in a layup for the 58-38 lead with 6:11 left in the contest. The Tigers went on to win by a score of 66-46.
The Tigers led for the whole game, but could not shake the Jets, leading by only 10 once before the big run. In the first half, FHSU looked like they might pull away with an 18-8 score, but Newman cut the margin to two at 22-20 with 1:19 remaining in the half. The Tigers scored the final four points for a 26-20 halftime lead.
The score margin remained in the single digits until the 19-2 run that started at the 10:47 mark of the second half.
Kate Lehman recorded a double-double with game highs in points and rebounds at 22 and 13, respectively. The sophomore center totaled a game-high with four blocks in 26 minutes.
Katelyn Edwards and
Tera Ingalsbe also scored double figures in points with 10 each. Ingalsbe was efficient scoring her 10 points in only 14 minutes.
After a first half field goal percent of 32.4 percent, FHSU hit half its shots in the second half, going 14-28 (50 percent) from the field. For the game, the Tigers were 40.3 percent (25-62). FHSU's post players had their way in the paint, scoring 44 points in the paint to 18 from Newman.
The Tiger defense held the Jets to under 30 percent from the field as Newman shot 28.6 percent (16-56), including 25 percent (8-32) in the second half. The Jets were led by Chynna Ramelb with 16 points and six rebounds. Leading scorer Kianna Flannagan, who averaged 19.3 points coming into tonight, was shutdown, scoring only nine points on 3-for-9 shooting, and she had five turnovers.
The Tigers travel to the Lady Blues Tournament this weekend for two games. FHSU takes on Arkansas Tech at 4 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 23), and the Tigers face Texas-Permian Basin on Saturday (Nov. 24) at 4 p.m. Both games are at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan.
