No. 17 Fort Hays State started the matchup with No. 23 Central Missouri with a 34-1 advantage and never looked back in a 95-50 win at Gross Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday (Dec. 5) night. The Tigers improved to 7-0 overall for the second straight season and are 1-0 in the MIAA.
The Tigers rolled early scoring 34 of the first 35 points for a 34-1 advantage with 8:37 left in the first half. The Jennies finally scored their first field goal of the game almost 12 minutes into the game at the 8:01 mark. FHSU led 47-15 at the break.
The Black and Gold's advantage in the second half never dropped below 30 points, and the Tigers pushed the lead to as high as 49 points twice. FHSU went up 87-38 with 4:41 left and led again by 49 at 91-42 with 1:48 remaining.
The 95 points is the most points scored this season, and the Tigers shot 57.4 percent (39-68) from the field in the game. FHSU went 7-for-13 from 3 for 53.8 percent from behind the 3-point line.
The Tigers defense was strong, especially in the first half, as FHSU held the Jennies to 23.1 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes. For the game, UCM shot 30.8 percent. In the first stanza, the Tigers forced 17 turnovers, and the Jennies totaled 23 turnovers in the game.
Kate Lehman finished with a double-double, her third in the last four games, with game highs in points and rebounds, totaling 24 and 11, respectively. Lehman was 11-for-15 from the field. She was also strong on defense, blocking five shots.
Katelyn Edwards poured in 14 points,
Tera Ingalsbe scored 13 and
Melissa Nelson hit double figures with 10 points.
The Tigers are 2-0 all-time in top 25 matchups. In 1996-97, No. 25-ranked FHSU defeated No. 22 Metro State by four points in Hays for the other top 25 win.
The Black and Gold goes on the road this weekend for a MIAA game with Missouri Western on Saturday (Dec. 8). Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. in St. Joseph, Mo.
