Tiger Softball Splits on Day 1 of Spring Fling

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Fort Hays State softball team went 1-1 on Friday (Feb. 24) at the 2012 Best Western Premier Spring Fling in Denton, Texas. The Tigers came from behind to beat Midwestern State 2-1 in the opener before the offense was held in check by Tarleton State in an 8-0 loss. Fort Hays State is now 5-2 on the season with three more games to be played this weekend.

Fort Hays State 2, Midwestern State 1
Box Score

Fort Hays State faced Midwestern State, a team ranked No. 20 in the preseason NFCA poll, in the first game of the day. The game saw just nine total hits, including just one in the first three innings.

Midwestern State was the first team to break through, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Courtney Ford. The run, however, was unearned because the runner who scored on the hit reached base on an error by the Tigers left fielder, Madison Putman.

Fort Hays State went into the top of the fifth inning trailing 1-0 and with only one hit in the game, but Chelsey Rottinghaus quickly changed all of that. Rottinghaus led off the inning with a solo home run, her first of the year, to tie the game at 1-1. The Tigers would get runners on at first and second later in the inning, but were unable to push another one across.

Fort Hays State would mount their final offensive attack in the top of the seventh. Amanda Vaupel doubled to center field with one out in the inning and advanced to third after Adriana Wortley flied out to center. Callie Wright then came through with a single into center which pushed Vaupel across and gave FHSU a 2-1 lead.

Maddie Holub picked up the win for Fort Hays State, improving to 3-1 on the year. She allowed just five hits in the game and struck out six while not allowing an earned run. Lindsi Glenn took the loss for Midwestern State after she pitched the final 2.1 innings in relief and allowed one run on two hits.

Tarleton State 8, Fort Hays State 0
Box Score

Fort Hays State struggled at the dish in the second game, getting just four base hits for the second straight game while being shut out for the first time this season. Tarleton State jumped on top 3-0 in the top of the second inning on a three-run home run from Tanner Pipkin. The lead then extended to 5-0 in the third inning after the TexAnns pushed two more runs across.

The Tigers were able to string together singles from Christine Moses and Taylor Nelson in the bottom of the third inning, but pinch runner Yasnaya Susoeff and Nelson were stranded at second and third base. Tarleton State added another three-run home run, this time from Bailee Maudin, in the top of the seventh to put the game away at 8-0. FHSU got their other two hits of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, but again they ended an inning with runners in scoring position.

Abby Morrison pitched five innings, giving up five earned runs on four hits, and took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the season. Samantha Swanda got the win for Tarleton after pitching a complete game shutout and striking out five batters.
