Holub Sets Career Home Run Record as Tigers Split on Saturday

The Tiger softball team picked up a split on Saturday (Feb. 25) at the 2012 Best Western Premier Spring Fling in Denton, Texas, falling to No. 8-ranked Angelo State 7-1 before defeating Texas Women's by the same score. Fort Hays State is now 6-3 on the year going into Sunday's (Feb. 26) game against St. Mary's (Texas).

Fort Hays State first game of the day was against an Angelo State team that is ranked No. 8 in the latest NFCA Top 25 poll. ASU got out to an early lead, scoring two runs in both the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead at the end of three innings. The Tigers would string together a pair of hits in both the third and fourth innings but were unable to push a run home.
 
The Tigers did get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when Maddie Holub hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-1. The home run is the 21st for Holub in her career, giving her the career record for home runs at Fort Hays State. Holub passed Emily Herl, who hit 20 home runs in her career from 2006-08.
 
Angelo State added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away and win by a final of 7-1.
 
Holub pitched a complete game and took the loss, dropping her record to 3-2 on the year. She struck out 11 batters and allowed just six hits, but she walked four batters and also hit three with a pitch. The Fort Hays State offense actually had more hits (7) than Angelo State (6), but the Tigers left seven runners on base. Madison Putman had a pair of singles in the game for the first multi-hit game of her career.

The Tigers got a strong pitching performance from Kaitlyn Shattleroe in the second game and used two big innings to pick up the victory over Texas Women's. FHSU scored four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Taylor Nelson and a two-run single from Wortley.
 
Fort Hays State added three runs in the top of the seventh on another RBI single from Wortley and a two-run double by Amanda Vaupel. Texas Women's put up their only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single, but it was too little too late and FHSU took the win 7-1.
 
Shattleroe pitcher her first complete game of the season, allowing just four hits and allowing one run. She also struck out two batters as she improved her record to 3-0 on the year.
 
Fort Hays State will play one final game on Sunday (Feb. 26) at the tournament against St. Mary's (Texas) starting at 9:00 am.
