The Fort Hays State softball team will hit the road this weekend for conference play against two of the MIAA's top teams. The Tigers, who are currently in third place in the MIAA standings, will face No. 21 Missouri Western on Friday (March 30) and No. 25 Emporia State on Saturday (March 31). The Missouri Western series has had the start time pushed from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm due to wet field conditions.

The Tigers reached the 20-win plateau last weekend after winning three out of four games against Lincoln and Lindenwood in Missouri to improve their record to 20-8 (7-1 MIAA) on the year. Missouri Western and Emporia State were the preseason picks to finish first and second in the MIAA and they have both started the year strongly. Missouri Western is 25-6 (8-2 MIAA) with both of their conference losses coming against the Lady Hornets. Emporia State is on top of the conference standings at 10-0 and 19-7 overall.

Fort Hays State has been paced this season by junior utility Maddie Holub, who earlier this week picked up her second MIAA Athlete of the Week award this season. Holub was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week after picking up two wins last weekend, including a one-hit shutout against Lindenwood. She previously was named the Hitter of the Week for the week of February 21. Holub is 11-5 on the year with a 2.04 ERA and ranks fourth in NCAA Division II in strikeouts with 176. She needs 15 more strikeouts to break the single-season school record of 191 set by Kayla Rupa in 2009.

Holub also has the highest batting average on the team at .387 and she is tied with Adriana Wortley for the team lead with five home runs. Amanda Vaupel has been strong at the plate in her freshman season, ranking among the conference leaders in hitting with a .379 average. Vaupel is second on the team with 18 RBI and 33 base hits. Taylor Nelson has a hit team-high seven doubles along with 20 RBI in her senior season with the Tigers.

Live audio will be offered for both doubleheaders this weekend along with live stats which are linked at the top of the story.
