The Fort Hays State softball team opens up play at the MIAA Centennial Postseason Tournament from Overland Park, Kan. on Thursday evening (April 26). The No. 3-seeded Tigers will face the No. 6 seed Pittsburg State at 6:00 pm and they are guaranteed to play at least two games on Thursday night.
The Tigers enter the tournament on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern last weekend to close out the regular season. FHSU beat Pitt State 5-1 in the first game and won the second 7-5 in dramatic fashion with two home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including a two-run walk-off shot from
Kellsi Olsen. Fort Hays State finished the regular season 29-17 (13-7 MIAA) and in sole possession of third place in the MIAA standings. Pittsburg State finished fourth in the conference standings, but had their winning percentage docked due to a self-reported eligibility violation, so they claimed the sixth seed.
Maddie Holub closed out the regular season on fire and claimed her third MIAA Player of the Week award on Tuesday after helping the Tigers win five of their last six games. She was named the conference's Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after throwing the fifth no-hitter in FHSU history last week against Northwest Missouri State and a one-hitter on Sunday against Missouri Southern. Holub was previously named the conference's Hitter of the Week for the week of February 21 and the Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 27.
Holub also continues to lead the team in batting average (.347) and she has hit a team-high seven home runs, but it was the Tiger seniors who have been coming on lately.
Taylor Nelson hit .538 last weekend and hit for the cycle in the series against Pitt State. Nelson has raised her yearly average to .320 and she leads the Tigers in runs scored, doubles, triples, RBI and slugging percentage from the leadoff position.
Adriana Wortley hit .429 against the Gorillas and Lions last weekend, getting six hits and scoring twice. Wortley and Holub are currently tied for the FHSU career record with 24 home runs.
Christine Moses hit .400 in her final homestand as a Tiger, getting four hits, including her second double of the season.
Fort Hays State enters the double-elimination tournament needing one victory to ensure them of a program-record fifth consecutive 30-win season. After facing Pitt State at 6:00 pm, the Tigers will meet either No. 2 seed Missouri Western or No. 7 seed Northwest Missouri State at 8:00 pm.
