Tigers Set Best Start in School History with Pair of Wins at Bentonville Tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Fort Hays State softball team picked up another pair of wins at the Bentonville Tournament in Bentonville, Ark. on Saturday (Feb. 16) to move to 6-0 overall. FHSU defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State 8-0 in five innings, and Henderson State 7-1 to record the best unbeaten start in the program's NCAA Division II history, passing the old mark of 5-0 set in 2009.

Fort Hays State 8, Southwestern Oklahoma State 0 (5 inn.)

Fort Hays State's bats were on fire and Paxton Duran dominated in the pitching circle in the first game of the day. Fort Hays State cranked out 14 hits and Duran allowed just one hit in the run-rule win in five innings.

Duran surrendered the only SWOSU hit to the leadoff batter in the fifth inning. She walked one, hit a batter, and struck out five.

The Tigers did the majority of their damage early, scoring four runs in the first and three in the second. Bianca Adame set the tone for the offense with a leadoff triple in the first. After a Courtney Dobson single, Maddie Holub delivered a triple to plate both runners. Danie Brinkmann had a RBI groundout to knock Holub home, then later in the inning Duran and Tori Beltz had back-to-back doubles to generate the fourth run in the first.

In the second with two outs, the Tigers recorded five straight singles to plate three more runs. Brinkmann had one RBI on a single and Amanda Vaupel followed with a two-RBI single. In the bottom of the fifth, Courtney Dobson ended the game with a RBI double to make it 8-0.

Duran moved to 3-0 on the season with the win and has allowed just one run through three starts. She has an 0.37 ERA through 19 innings.

Fort Hays State 7, Henderson State 1

Jordan Jones got her first start as a pitcher for the Tigers and the bats came alive late to push FHSU to a 7-1 win over Henderson State. Jones surrendered her only run of the game in the first inning on a solo home run.

The score remained 1-0 through four innings until Kellsi Olsen delivered a two-run home run in the fifth to give FHSU the lead.

The Tigers extended the lead to 4-1 in the sixth when Paxton Duran knocked in a run on a fielder's choice and Tori Beltz followed with a RBI single.

Maddie Holub entered to pitch in a save opportunity and converted, shutting the door on the Reddies over the final two innings. She notched her first save of the season by recording five of the six outs by strikeout. That allowed Jones to get the win in her first start as a Tiger, who allowed four hits and struck out two over five innings.

The Tigers added insurance in the seventh as Holub had a RBI single and Danie Brinkmann and Amanda Vaupel had back-to-back RBI doubles.
