Tigers Sweep Defending MIAA Champions in Emporia

The 21st-ranked Tiger softball team swept defending MIAA champion Emporia State in Emporia, Kan. on Friday (Mar. 15) afternoon by scores of 7-1 and 6-3. The wins snapped a 23-game conference game win streak for the Hornets after going a perfect 20-0 in MIAA play last year. Fort Hays State improved to 17-3 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA. Emporia State moved to 10-7 overall, 0-2 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State 7, Emporia State 1

Fort Hays State did all of its scoring on three home runs in the first game. Danie Brinkmann put FHSU up early with a two-run homer in the first. After Tricia Vogel hit a solo home run for the Hornets in the second to cut the lead in half, neither team scored through the sixth inning. Maddie Holub helped her own cause in the seventh with a two-run home run and then Tori Beltz hit her first collegiate homer, a three-run shot.

Holub did not allow a runner past second base after the second inning, allowing just two hits in the game. She struck out 10 and allowed one walk. She moved to 9-0 on the season with the win.

Fort Hays State 6, Emporia State 3

Fort Hays State took an early 1-0 lead with a Maddie Holub sacrifice fly RBI in the first inning. The Tigers tacked on two more in the fifth with the help of a couple Hornet errors. Kellsi Olsen had a sacrifice fly RBI in the inning.

Emporia State took advantage of a Tiger error in the fifth to score two runs and close the gap to 3-2, but FHSU answered with a run in the sixth as Olsen knocked in another run on a ground ball.

The Hornets put the pressure on in the Tigers in the sixth, pulling back within one with runners at second and third with one out. Maddie Holub entered to close the door, getting the final two outs of the inning with a pop up and strikeout to preserve the lead for starter Paxton Duran.

FHSU tacked on a pair of insurance runs for Holub in the seventh, Duran picked up an RBI in the process. Holub got through the seventh without trouble, striking out the last two batters of the game to earn her second save of the season.
