The 17th-ranked Fort Hays State softball team swept a conference doubleheader at Truman on Friday afternoon (Mar. 29) in Kirksville, Mo. The Tigers won both games by shutout, 1-0 and 4-0, highlighted by
Maddie Holub throwing the second complete game no-hitter of her career at FHSU in game one. Fort Hays State moved to 25-5 overall and 7-1 in the MIAA, while Truman went to 16-8 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA.
Game 1: Fort Hays State 1, Truman 0
Maddie Holub faced just two batters over the minimum to record the second complete game no-hitter of her career at Fort Hays State. Truman had one batter reach in the third that was hit by a Holub pitch and the other runner reach via a walk in the fourth. Holub recorded nine strikeouts in the game.
Holub helped her own cause by hitting a two-out solo home run in the third inning, which proved to be the only scoring of the game for either squad. It was her 12th homer of the season.
In both of the complete game no-hit efforts of Holub's career at FHSU, the Tigers won 1-0. The run scored in each contest were on solo home runs. Last year, she threw a complete game no-hitter at Northwest Missouri State, allowing the same, a hit batter and a walk. Also in that game, Fort Hays State scored one run on five hits, just like it did against Truman on Friday.
Holub has now had a hand in three of the six no hitters in Fort Hays State's NCAA history in softball. She combined with
Adrian Mohr to throw a no-hitter against Newman in 2010.
Game 2: Fort Hays State 4, Truman 0
Maddie Holub continued her big day in game two by putting FHSU on the board early with her second solo home run of the day in the first inning, her 13th of the season. That homer tied the single season record for home runs at FHSU, pulling even with Jessika Anastos' record set in 2008.
In the second,
Bianca Adame swiped a pair of bases after getting a single and came in to score on a throwing error by the Truman catcher. Holub walked, stole a base, then advanced the final two bases on two wild pitches to score another run to make it 3-0. In the fourth, Adame drew a bases loaded walk to plate another run for the Tigers to make it 4-0.
That would be plenty of runs for
Paxton Duran, who threw her fourth shutout of the season to move to 10-4 overall. She scattered six hits, walked one, and struck out five. Truman threatened with the bases loaded in the sixth, but Duran got a strikeout to end the potential rally.
Fort Hays State will play a doubleheader at Lindenwood on Saturday in St. Charles, Mo. at noon. The Tigers remain tied for the MIAA lead with Central Oklahoma at 7-1.
