The 17th-ranked Fort Hays State softball team moved to 27-5 overall and 9-1 in the MIAA with a doubleheader sweep of Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 30) in St. Charles, Mo. The Tigers won game one by run-rule, 11-1 in five innings, then held on in game two for a 3-2 win.
Game 1: Fort Hays State 11, Lindenwood 1 (5 inn. run-rule)
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings, scoring one in the first on a
Paxton Duran RBI single, then two more runs in the second with a RBI groundout by
Courtney Dobson and RBI single by
Maddie Holub.
The lead opened up to 8-0 in the fourth inning when the Tigers plated five runs.
Danie Brinkmann opened the scoring with a two-RBI single and
Amanda Vaupel followed with a RBI single.
Paxton Duran kept the consecutive run of singles going with another to plate the fourth run. Vaupel scored the fifth run of the inning when Duran was caught stealing, but she came in from third on the play.
Maddie Holub was perfect through the first three innings until she hit the first batter of the fourth inning. She kept the Lions hitless for two more outs until giving up a RBI single. That ended a run of 10 consecutive hitless innings by Holub after she threw a no-hitter against Truman on Friday. She kept the Lions hitless in the fifth, finishing with a one-hit performance. She moved to 14-1 overall on the season with the win.
The Tigers plated their final three runs in the fifth on a RBI groundout by Brinkmann and a two-RBI double by Vaupel. Both Brinkmann and Vaupel finished with three RBI in the game.
Game 2: Fort Hays State 3, Lindenwood 2
Fort Hays State jumped out to an early lead once again in the second contest, leading 2-0 after two innings.
Bianca Adame scored in the first on a stolen base and throwing error by the Lindenwood catcher.
Courtney Dobson had a RBI single in the second.
Paxton Duran was cruising along with just two hits allowed through four innings, but the Lions had a couple of hits and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to generate two runs, tying the game.
Jenna Lang led off the sixth inning with a double and came in to score on a two-out RBI bases loaded walk drawn by
Maddie Holub.
With the 3-2 lead, Holub entered to pitch the final two innings. She worked around a pair of walks at the start of Lindenwood's sixth inning and then stranded a runner at third base in the seventh to end the game. Duran went 5.0 innings, allowing four hits with three walks and struck out three. She moved to 11-4 overall with the win. Holub picked up her third save of the season in 2.0 innings of work, allowing a hit and two walks, while striking out three.
Fort Hays State begins a run of 12-consecutive home contests next week on Tuesday (Apr. 2) against Oklahoma-Panhandle State at 2 pm.
