Box Score 2 Fort Hays State softball split a pair of games at No. 11 University of Tampa on Wednesday (Mar. 6). The Tigers took game one 1-0, but dropped game two 2-1. Both games were decided in the final inning. Fort Hays moved to 8-2 overall on the season.
Game 1: Fort Hays State 1, University of Tampa 0
In a match-up between two of the best pitchers in NCAA Division II,
Maddie Holub was on the winning side of a contest that saw 30 strikeouts between Holub and opposing pitcher Kayla Cox. Cox struck out 19 Tigers and threw a no-hitter while Holub struck out 11 Spartans and allowed just three hits.
Struggling to reach base the entire game, Fort Hays State's
Bianca Adame led off the seventh inning with a bunt that resulted in a fielding error. She then took second base on a throwing error by the Tampa catcher. With two outs in the inning,
Danie Brinkmann hit a fly ball to centerfield that was dropped and allowed Adame to score.
In the bottom of the seventh, Holub worked around a leadoff hit to pick up her third shutout win of the season. She also kept her ERA at 0.00 for the season. With a runner at third and two outs, Holub got the final out by inducing a pop up that she gloved to end the game.
Game 2: University of Tampa 2, Fort Hays State 1
Fort Hays State looked as though it was going to win game two by the same score as game one, but Tampa had a walk-off two-RBI double to win. Freshman pitcher
Paxton Duran was impressive in holding the nationally-ranked Spartans scoreless for the first six innings, allowing just two hits in that span. After allowing two hits in the seventh, Duran was just one out away from a complete game shutout, but gave up the game-winning double that tagged her with a hard-luck loss.
Fort Hays State scored its lone run in the fourth when
Maddie Holub led off the inning with a double. She would later come around to score on a RBI sacrifice bunt by
Amanda Vaupel.
Fort Hays State faces Post University and University of Mary on Thursday at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
