Tigers Sweep Another Pair Friday at NTC Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Fort Hays State moved to 12-2 overall on the season with a pair of extra-inning wins at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. on Friday (Mar. 8). The Tigers defeated Saint Anselm 5-4 in eight innings, then picked up a solid in-region win with a 2-1 win over Wayne State (Neb.) in eight innings.

Fort Hays State 5, Saint Anselm 4

Fort Hays State fell behind early after a three-run second inning by Saint Anselm, but a solo home run by Maddie Holub and a two-run homer by Amanda Vaupel tied the game 3-3 after the top of the fourth. All three runs were scored off FHSU starter Jordan Jones, who lasted just 1.2 innings in the start.

Saint Anselm jumped back ahead in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run off Paxton Duran, who pitched the rest of the game in relief of Jones. It was just the second home run of the season allowed by Duran.

The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but could only push one across as Duran helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly RBI to tie the game.

The game went to extra-innings, invoking the international tiebreaker. In the top half of the eighth, Bianca Adame was placed on second. She advanced to third on a bunt single by Courtney Dobson. Dobson stole second, which allowed Adame to come in to score on the throw down to second base.

In the bottom half of the inning, a line-out double play erased the runner off second base immediately for Saint Anselm, then Duran got the final batter to ground out to end the game.

Duran picked up the win in relief, moving to 5-2 on the season. She struck out five and allowed just four hits in 6.2 innings of work.

Fort Hays State 2, Wayne State 1

Maddie Holub gave FHSU a lead early with a solo home run in the first, but she saw a 40-inning streak of not allowing an earned run to open the season finally come to an end in the fourth when she allowed a RBI double.

The Tigers had to go to the international tiebreaker once again, winning in eight innings for the second straight game. Holub kept the runner placed on second from moving as she invoked a pop up to the catcher to open the inning, then struck out two batters. In the bottom half of the eighth, Amy Dunn was placed on second. Kellsi Olsen followed with a walk then Bianca Adame reached with a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt as Wayne State was unable to get the out at third base. With the bases loaded, Courtney Dobson ended the game with a RBI single.

Fort Hays State closes out the weekend in Florida with Winona State and Grand Valley State on Saturday (Mar. 9).
