Fort Hays State, ranked 14th in the nation, saw a school record 12-game win streak snapped in game two against Missouri Southern on Friday in Hays, but not before
Maddie Holub threw a second-consecutive perfect game in the opener in a 5-0 win over the Lions. The Tigers had the bases loaded in the seventh down 9-8, but could not push across the tying run as the Lions escaped Hays with a split. FHSU is now 34-6 overall and 14-2 in the MIAA.
Game 1: Fort Hays State 5, Missouri Southern 0
Just six days after throwing a perfect game against Northwest Missouri State in Hays on April 6,
Maddie Holub was masterful once again by throwing another perfect game in consecutive starts. Working through several deep counts early in the game and
Katlyn Kern's diving effort in the right center field gap to rob a potential double or triple from the second batter of the game were crucial early in Holub's second-consecutive perfect game effort.
Holub recorded two strikeouts in five innings, punched out the side in the second inning, and had one strikeout in the fifth for a total of 14 in the game. She extended her streak of 10 or more strikeouts in four consecutive starts after punching out a school record 17 in the previous two starts and 14 in her first game of that run.
It looked as though Holub might have to record a second straight perfect performance with just one run, which the Tigers pushed across on a bases-loaded walk by
Danie Brinkmann in the fourth. However, Holub has been just as dominant at the plate this year and showed why in the sixth with a two-run home run to left center field to give herself some breathing room heading into the seventh. It was her 15th home run of the season and her batting average went up 12 points on the day to .444 for the season. Brinkmann and
Tori Beltz would also follow with solo shots in the inning to give Holub the five-run cushion, much comfier than the 1-0 margin she had last week in the perfect game against Northwest Missouri State.
For Holub, it's her second perfect game of the season and she moved to a tie for fourth for most perfect games thrown in NCAA Division II history with two. Three is the record, held by three players. It was the fourth complete game no-hitter of her careeer (third this year and one last year) and she's had a hand in at least five of Fort Hays State's eight no hitters in its 15-year Division II history. She threw a combined no-hitter with
Adrian Mohr in 2010.
Game 2: Missouri Southern 9, Fort Hays State 8
Fort Hays State fell into a 4-0 deficit early, but rallied for five runs in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. That was short lived as Missouri Southern struck for four more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to move back in front by four. The Tigers remained resilient as they have all year, scoring three times in the sixth to pull within one. FHSU loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but
Bianca Adame lined out to left and
Courtney Dobson struck out looking to end the game.
Maddie Holub and
Bianca Adame both drove home a team-high two runs in the game, each on two-RBI singles. Pitcher
Paxton Duran had a RBI double,
Amanda Vaupel had a RBI single, and
Tori Beltz had a sacrifice fly RBI.
Missouri Southern went through three pitchers by Haley Pypes, the losing pitcher in game one, kept the Tigers off the scoreboard over the final 1.1 innings for her first save of the season. She worked around two hits and a walk in the seventh to keep the bases loaded to end the game. Kayce Moore was the winner for MSSU in relief, going 2.0 innings with three runs and seven hits allowed.
Michala Wood and Dawn Grass each had a big game for the Lions. Wood had a single and triple with three RBI and Grass was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
The Tigers look to bounce back from the game two loss with a doubleheader against Pittsburg State on Saturday at 1 pm at Tiger Stadium in Hays. FHSU dropped to second in the conference standings at 14-2 after Central Oklahoma swept Emporia State in Edmond, Okla. on Friday. Eighth-ranked UCO is now 13-1 in conference play.
