Holub Nearly Perfect With Another No-Hitter: #18 FHSU Blanks SBU in Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The 18th-ranked Fort Hays State softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep at Southwest Baptist on Saturday (Apr. 20) by scores of 7-0 and 14-0. Maddie Holub recorded her fourth complete game no-hitter of the season in game one, allowing just one baserunner that was hit by a pitch. Paxton Duran allowed just one hit in game two in a run-rule win in five innings. The Tigers moved to 37-7 overall and 17-3 in the MIAA with the wins and are now back to even with Central Oklahoma in the loss column in the MIAA standings.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 7, Southwest Baptist 0

Maddie Holub retired the first eight batters of the game before allowing her only blemish in the circle for the afternoon, a hit batter in the third inning. The batter already had two strikes on her before giving SBU its only baserunner of the game.

Holub settled in to retire 13 more in a row, posting her fourth complete game no-hitter of the season. All four of the no-hitters have been in a span of just over three weeks. It started with a no-hitter on March 29 at Truman, then her perfect game efforts in back-to-back starts on April 6 vs. Northwest Missouri State and April 12 vs. Missouri Southern. The latest victim is Southwest Baptist, just a week and a day after Holub's second perfect game. It was the ninth no-hitter in FHSU history and fifth complete game no-hitter in Holub's career. She's now had a hand in six of the nine no-hitters in school history.

The Tiger offense gave Holub breathing room early with one run in the first and four in the third. FHSU tacked on its final pair of runs in the fifth. Courtney Dobson and Callie Wright led FHSU with two RBI each. Dobson had a pair of RBI singles and Wright had a RBI single and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Kellsi Olsen led the Tigers with three hits, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a RBI. Holub also had one RBI in the game with a bases loaded walk.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 14, Southwest Baptist 0

Fort Hays State left no doubt early in the second game by matching its game one total for runs in just the first inning. After scoring seven in the first, FHSU plated one in the second, three in the fourth and three in the fifth for a run-rule win.

In the seven-run first, Courtney Dobson and Tori Beltz each had two-run homers. Kellsi Olsen drove home a run in the first with a triple and Bianca Adame followed with a RBI double. Amanda Vaupel had a RBI groundout in the second to make it 8-0.

Maddie Holub and Vaupel each had solo homers in the fourth and Jenna Lang knocked home a run with a single. Adara Erickson and Madison Putman each had RBIs in the fifth after entering the game as reserves. Reserves Katlyn Kern and Calee Eaton also had hits in the fifth. Paxton Duran capped the three-run fifth with a RBI single.

Duran tossed a one-hitter in the circle, her second one-hit complete game effort of the season. She allowed just one walk and struck out four, moving to 14-6 overall on the season.

With Central Oklahoma losing twice in four games over the weekend, FHSU is now back even with the Bronchos in the loss column of the MIAA standings for first place. Fort Hays State heads to Warrensburg, Mo. on Sunday to take on Central Missouri at 12 pm in a doubleheader. A pair of wins would put the Tigers in a deadlock for the conference lead with one week to go in the regular season.
