Box Score Fort Hays State, the No. 1 seed in the Central Regional 1 Tournament held in Hays, Kan., saw its amazing 2013 season come to a close on Sunday afternoon (May 12) at the hands of Central Oklahoma. The 19th-ranked Bronchos defeated the 10th-ranked Tigers 7-1 to win the regional championship game. The Tigers ended their year at 47-12 overall, the best season in school history by far, eclipsing the previous school record for wins by 12.
Central Oklahoma, just as it did in the winner's bracket against FHSU on Saturday, jumped out to a fast start with four runs in the first inning. Central Oklahoma utilized its speed on the bases to keep the pressure on the Tigers throughout the game.
Fort Hays State's offense struggled against Kalynn Schrock for the second straight game as she held the Tigers hitless through four innings.
Tori Beltz finally recorded the first Tiger hit in the fifth inning. The only other hits were singles by
Kellsi Olsen and
Bianca Adame in the sixth inning and Adame came in to score on a fielding error off the bat of
Maddie Holub.
Holub started the game for FHSU and lasted just a third of an inning, allowing three hits and four runs (two earned) with one walk.
Katlyn Kern came in to help control the Broncho offense for three innings, allowing two runs in the fourth.
Paxton Duran pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed an unearned run with just one hit and two strikeouts. Holub finished her spectacular senior year at 29-4 overall.
Central Oklahoma recorded nine hits in the game, led by Kacie Edwards and Hayley Hudson each with two. Edwards and Sam Cool each had two RBI. Ally Dziadula scored all three times she reached base.
Central Oklahoma, the MIAA regular season champion, moved to 45-11 overall and will play in the Super Regional next weekend against Winona State. The winner of that moves on to the NCAA Championships in Virginia.
