Box Score
Fort Hays State needed just five innings to advance on the championship side of the MIAA Tournament on Friday, defeating Pittsburg State in five innings by run-rule, 8-0.
Maddie Holub threw her fifth no-hitter of the season, the first of her career in a run-rule complete game effort. The Tigers moved to 42-9 overall with the win.
Holub battled the highly adverse conditions of rain and sometimes sleet to keep the Gorillas hitless. She struck out five and walked four. She recorded her 300th strikeout of the season to end the first inning, the second straight season she's reached the 300 strikeout mark. Holub moved to 25-1 overall on the season with the win.
After
Courtney Dobson and Holub reached base in the first inning,
Amanda Vaupel got the scoring triggered with a two-out, two-RBI single through the right side. A
Tori Beltz double, followed by a
Jenna Lang RBI single up the middle made it 3-0 after two innings. An error by the Gorillas allowed another run to score in the third to make it 4-0.
The Tigers pushed the game to the brink of a run-rule margin in the fourth with a RBI single by Holub, a RBI single by
Danie Brinkmann, and another run scored on the second error of the game by the Gorillas.
Fort Hays State ended the game on a wild play in the fifth when
Bianca Adame was credited a sacrifice fly on the edge of outfield grass.
Jenna Lang started off third base, which froze the shortstop momentariy. When Pitt State's fielder threw to fifth, Lang continued her sprint towards home and got under the tag of the catcher for the run.
After all first round games were completed, the tournament was halted due to the miserable conditions. The Tigers return to the field on Saturday morning against third-seed Missouri Western, which defeated sixth-seed Truman 5-3 in the opening round. Fort Hays State will play its second game of Saturday at 1 pm.
