Box Score Fort Hays State completed a home sweep of its rivals this week with a 69-62 victory over Washburn on Saturday afternoon at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Â
The Tigers (15-4, 8-4 MIAA) were dominant once again on the boards, outrebounding the Ichabods (13-6, 8-4 MIAA) 47-29.  19 of those rebounds were offensive, giving the Tigers ample second-chance opportunities that resulted in 24 points. WU had just eight second chance points.Â
Â
FHSU is now tied for fourth with WU and Missouri Southern in the conference standings. Â The win also snapped the Tigers' four-game losing streak against WU.
Â
Katelyn Edwards pulled down double-digit rebounds for the second consecutive game (and third of the last four), grabbing 14 boards to go with eight points and a 4-of-5 performance at the free-throw line.
Â
Kate Lehman started slow with just two points in the first half, but finished with a team-high 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks.Â
Nikola Kacperska had season-highs in points (11) and rebounds (five), while
Tera Ingalsbe put up double-digits in points (10) for the seventh time this season.
Â
Guard
Beth Bohuslavsky's six assists led the team, as she went 5-of-6 from the line for all of her points.Â
Â
With the team's tied 13-13 at the 11:26, neither FHSU nor WU would score for the next 3:06. At that point, a
Jill Faxon 3-pointer started an 11-2 run for FHSU that lasted over three minutes and included four free throws and five points from Edwards.
Â
FHSU never relinquished the lead after that, though Washburn would rally back on several occasions. Â The first of those occured at 3:36 of the first half, when WU pulled within five (25-20). Â With 3:02 on the clock, though,
Chelsea Mason hit a 3-pointer to shut the door.
Â
In the final six seconds of the half, Bohuslavsky just missed a layup, but Ingalsbe's offensive rebound and last second bucket sent the Tigers into the break, up 33-26.
Â
Ingalsbe picked up where she left off by hitting a 3-pointer just 26 seconds into the second half and stretching FHSU's lead to 10. Still, WU crawled back within two (42-40) over the next six minutes, at 13:42, and tied the game, 43-43, with 12:31 to play.
Â
Once again, Ingalsbe popped up with a timely 3-pointer to put FHSU back in control and start a 10-2 stretch for FHSU. That run lasted 5:25 and sent the game under 10 minutes with FHSU leading, 53-45.Â
Â
Up seven (55-48) with 7:20 to play, FHSU would need to endure one last Ichabod rally – this time a burst of six unanswered that shrunk the deficit to one, 55-54, just under the five-minute mark. Inglasble, though, ended the run with her final jumper of the day to start FHSU's answer – a six-point burst of its own. That stretch sent the game inside 2:30 with the Tigers up seven, 61-54.
Â
Over the final 57 seconds, FHSU iced the game with 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line, including Kacperska's final two of the night with 11 seconds to play – finalizing the score at 69-62.
Â
Fort Hays State is off until Wednesday (Feb. 5) when the team treks north to Nebraska-Kearney for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
