No. 10 Fort Hays State's
C.J. Napier and
Tanner Kriss closed out the 2014 season with All-American performances at the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. Napier finished fourth at 141 pounds while Kriss was sixth at 197 pounds on Saturday (March 15).
Napier reached the semifinals after going 2-0 yesterday, but dropped a 5-3 decision in overtime to Daniel Ownbey of UNC-Pembroke. In the consolation semifinals, Napier picked up a narrow 6-5 decision over BJ Young of Newberry to reach the third-place match. In that contest, Napier fell just short in his second overtime match of the day, falling to Dylan D'Urso (Mercyhurst) on riding time in the second tiebreaker. The match was tied, 3-3 at that point. Napier finished the season at 36-8 overall as an All-American, scoring 11.5 team points.
Kriss earned a berth to the semifinals with two wins yesterday, but fell in sudden victory to Romero Cotton (Nebraska-Kearney), 3-1 in the first match on Saturday. In his second match of the day, Kriss dropped a 9-5 decision to Brandonn Johnson of Notre Dame, qualifying Kriss for the fifth-place match. In that conteset, Kriss lost by fall in 2:10 to Joe Brandt of Ashland. Kriss finished the season at 17-12 overall as an All-American, scoring eight team points.
Napier and Kriss are the first All-Americans for Fort Hays State since 2011, when
Mitchell Means was fourth. Means (157),
Josh Rodriguez (174) and
Jon Inman (184) joined Napier and Kriss at the Championships this season.
FHSU finished 21st in the final team point standings with 21.5.
