Tigers advance to MIAA Semifinals with 78-57 victory over Missouri Southern

Box Score Fifth-seeded Fort Hays State moved onto the semifinals of the MIAA Championships with a 78-57 victory over fourth-seeded Missouri Southern on Thursday (March 6) in Kansas City, Mo.

FHSU (21-7, 13-7 MIAA) never trailed in the game and shot 43.6 percent from the field, including an 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) effort from long range.

Four Tigers saw double figures in scoring, led by Beth Bohuslavsky's 15 points (13 of which came in the final 10 minutes of the second half).  Tera Ingalsbe had 14 points while going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, Kate Lehman finished with 13 points and Chelsea Mason netted 11.

Katelyn Edwards just missed a double-double, pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds to go with nine points, while Lehman added five rebounds and six blocks.  Lehman has now totaled at least five blocks (her NCAA-leading average) in 17 games this season.

Taylor Chandler had eight points to go with two steals, matching Bohuslavsky for the team lead in swipes.

Up 5-4 just under the 16-minute mark, Lehman hit a layup that started a 10-0 burst for the Tigers that lasted until 13:50, when an MSSU jumper put the score at 15-6.

Mason's 3-pointer with 10:38 on the clock put FHSU ahead by 11 (22-11) for the second time of the half.  The Tigers' lead grew to 15 soon after as a 3-pointer from Ingalsbe and a layup from Edwards put FHSU ahead, 27-12 with 8:02 to play in the half.  Ingalsbe and Chandler added two more 3-pointers over the next two minutes of action, increasing FHSU's lead to 33-17 with 6:53 to play.  All told, that spurt was a 14-4 run for FHSU that lasted over five minutes.

MSSU answered with an 8-0 run of its own near the 6-minute mark, but a layup from Mason at 4:57 stopped the run and put the Tigers' back up by 12, 37-25.  Still, the Lions wouldn't go away, closing the half on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to eight, 41-33.

With 17:57 to play in the game, Lehman's layup sparked a run of seven unanswered for FHSU, capped by Nikola Kacperska's 3-pointer to push FHSU's lead back to 15, 50-35.

The Lions closed the gap to 11 (55-44) with 12:06 to play, but that was as close as they could come.  FHSU pulled away with an 11-0 run that included back-to-back 3-pointers from Bohuslavsky and Chandler, pushing the lead to 22 (66-44) with 8:30 to play.

Bohuslavsky scored eight straight points for the Tigers from 2:34 to 1:36, giving FHSU a 25-point lead (78-53), its largest of the day.

Fort Hays State will take on top-seeded Central Missouri in the MIAA semifinals on Saturday, March 8 at Noon from Municipal Auditorium.
