Fort Hays State Softball returns to conference play this weekend in Missouri with doubleheaders at Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist. FHSU faces UCM on Saturday starting at 3 pm, then takes on SBU on Sunday starting at 2 pm. The Tigers are 9-19 overall, but 2-0 in MIAA play so far.
Â
The Tigers look to snap a six-game losing skid. FHSU fell in a pair of games at Metro State on Tuesday night by scores of 6-2 and 9-8. FHSU won its only two conference games of the season so far, sweeping a doubleheader with Northeastern State in Hays on March 10.
Â
Carrie Clarke has a 3.44 ERA in the circle, carrying a 4-4 record for the season.
Hailey Chapman looks to break out of a recent funk in the pitching circle. She had a solid 2.28 ERA in the month of February, but has struggled to a 7.84 ERA in the month of March. Chapman dropped her last four starts after a win over Northeastern State on March 10. Clarke's ERA has been on the decline from the start of the year, going from 5.19 in February to a solid 2.42 in March. A team ERA of 5.32 and allowance of 6.4 runs per game in March has been a big factor towards a 4-11 record for the month.
Â
FHSU has seen its run production offensively increase in March from February. The Tigers averaged just 3.7 runs per game in February, but have pushed that number up to 4.4 in the month of March. FHSU now has four players hitting .300 or better on the season, led by
Veronica Knittig at .370. She has a team-best nine extra-base hits and 19 RBI.
Â
Central Missouri enters Saturday's doubleheader at 13-16 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA. The Jennies split a doubleheader with Southwest Baptist and swept a doubleheader with Missouri Southern to produce their current conference record. UCM has just one batter hitting over .300 for the season in Lauryn Deer. UCM is averaging just 3.4 runs per game overall, but all three of its pitchers have earned run averages inside 3.2 and the team ERA for the season is 2.92.
Â
Southwest Baptist enters Sunday's doubleheader with a record of 19-7 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA. The Bearcats split with Central Missouri and then swept Nebraska-Kearney for their current conference mark. Kacey Ayers has a solid 1.75 ERA and 11-3 record in the pitching circle, while regulars in the lineup hit better than .300 on the season, led by Jaidyn Mawhinney at .452. SBU has a team ERA of 2.30.
