Women's Basketball Looks to Secure MIAA Tournament Bye on Senior Night

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team looks to wrap up a first round bye in the MIAA Tournament Thursday (Feb. 22) when Southwest Baptist makes the trip to Hays. First tip is set for 5:30 p.m.

*Tiger fans will have one last chance to enter the Big Creek Crossing Points Promotion before the two gift cards are given away. They are worth more than $600 each! You must be present to win, so if you have entered the contest at all this season be sure to be in attendance!*
*Stick around for the men's game when world record holder Bob Fisher goes for another free throw shooting record at halftime.*

The Tigers can lock up third place in the conference standings with a win Thursday, securing a trip to Kansas City as the top four teams in the league get a bye in the opening round of the conference loss. FHSU still has a chance to finish in the top four with a loss.

Fort Hays State enters the final game of the regular season 22-5 overall and 13-5 in league play, while Southwest Baptist is 15-11 on the year and 7-10 in the MIAA. A late layup from Emma Stroyan gave the Tigers a road victory by the slimmest of margins, 62-61.

The series with SBU did not start until FHSU joined the MIAA in 2006, with the Tigers leading, 13-7. FHSU has dominated at home, winning nine of 10 games inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, including nine-straight home victories. The Tigers are 12-4 against Southwest Baptist under Hobson, including an 8-0 mark at home. While SBU controlled the series over the first few years, Fort Hays State has dominated of late, winning four in a row and 10 of the last 11 contests.

This will be the final regular season home game for Stroyan, the lone senior on this year's roster. The forward transferred to FHSU last season and made an immediate impact, ranking second in the league with 56 blocks while grabbing the second-most rebounds (5.1 rebounds per game) on the team as a junior. The Bloomington, Ill. native has 93 blocks to her name, second-most in program history in less than two full seasons. She has scored in double figures 12 times this season, including seven times over the last 11 games.

After opening the conference season 0-5, the Bearcats bounced all the way back to .500 in league play thanks to a 7-2 stretch before losing their last three games. Southwest Baptist has dipped to ninth in the MIAA standings, one game back of Missouri Southern in eighth, the final slot to get a home game in the first round of the MIAA Tournament. SBU is 4-6 in true road games this season. They have the second-highest scoring offense in the league, averaging 75.7 points per game. However, they also give up the second-most points in the conference, allowing 71.4 points each night. SBU leads the conference at the charity stripe, knocking down 83.7 percent from the free throw line. Opposing teams grab 40.3 rebounds per game against the Bearcats, the most in the league.

SBU is one of two schools with multiple players ranked in the top 10 in scoring in the MIAA. Megan Rosenbohm is tied for first in the MIAA with 20.1 points per game, while Caylee Richardson ranks 10th with 15.6 points per contest. Rosenbohm ranks third in the league in assists (3.8 apg) and tops the list in steals (3.0 spg). Richardson sits in fifth in the conference in rebounding, grabbing 8.7 boards per game.
