The 5-0 Tigers look to put an emphatic stamp on a dominating homestand, defeating their last three opponents by an average of 55.3 points. Tabor enters Saturday with a 4-5 record, including a 1-3 mark outside of Hillsboro.
It is the fourth consecutive year the Tigers have played the Bluejays of Tabor College, and the ninth time under head coach
Tony Hobson. The Tigers are 20-0 all-time against Tabor, dating back to the 1971-72 season.
The Tigers lead the nation in scoring defense, limiting opponents to just 42.6 points each night through five games this season. The second-best defense allows nearly five points per game more than FHSU (Arkansas-Monticello, 47.5 ppg). The most points the Tigers have allowed this season is 54.
Fort Hays State is outscoring its opponents by an average of 37.4 points per game, the second-highest scoring margin in Division II.
The Tigers also rank in the top 10 nationally in assist/turnover ratio (second, 1.86), assists per game (10th, 19.0), field goal percentage defense (sixth, 31.2 percent), personal fouls per game (10th, 13.2), turnover margin (fifth, 12.2), turnovers per game (third, 10.2) and winning percentage (first, 100.0).
Belle Barbieri picked up her fourth double-double in Monday's victory, placing her sixth in the country and one behind the national leaders. After dishing out eight assists in the win over Saint Mary,
Lauryn Reither raised her assist/turnover ratio to 5.00, which ranks third in the country and is tops in the MIAA.
While the Tigers lead NCAA Division II in scoring defense, Tabor ranks fourth in NAIA Division II in the same category. The Bluejays have allowed opponents just 53.4 points per contest through nine games this season. On the offensive end, Tabor is scoring an average of 57.7 points per game. The Bluejays knocks down 73.8 percent from the free-throw line, ranking 22nd in NAIA DII.
Sophomore Zoe Shieldnight leads the team in scoring with 10.5 points per night thanks to a shooting percentage of 55.4 percent, including a 46.2 percent effort from deep. Four other Bluejays score at least six points per night. Kyli Burns pulls down a team-best 4.1 rebounds per night while averaging one block per contest.
