Fort Hays State Softball returns to action this weekend in the Oklahoma City area, where they will play four games against teams from both the Great American Conference and Lone Star Conference. The Tigers started their season 1-3 last weekend in Denver. Live video (pay-per view/subscription) and stats will be available for all games this weekend.
Â
This will be the first of two weekend trips to the Oklahoma City area for the Tigers. They will return for four more games next week. This week, they are scheduled to face Southern Nazarene, Oklahoma Christian, Cameron, and Midwestern State. The games against Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Christian will be at Tom Heath Field, home of Oklahoma Christian, on Friday, then on Saturday the Tigers will be at Gerry Pinkston Stadium, home of Central Oklahoma.
Â
The Tigers look to have their bats come to life after struggling to just a team batting average of .154 last weekend. However, they were still able to generate a .274 on-base percentage with patience at the plate, drawing 13 walks and being hit by pitches five times.
Â
A pair of multi-run home runs by Tiger opponents last week were the difference between the Tigers potentially being 3-1 to start the year. In a 6-5 loss at MSU Denver, the Tigers were one out away from a win up 5-4, but saw the Roadrunners walk off with two-run home run to end the game. In a 4-2 loss at Regis, FHSU only trailed 1-0 in the second inning before a three-run home run with two outs gave the Rangers enough to hold off the Tigers the rest of the way.
Â
The Opponents…
Southern Nazarene (0-4)
Fort Hays State is 5-0 all-time against Southern Nazarene, with the last win occurring last year in Choctaw, Oklahoma by a score of 3-2. Head coach
Adrian Pilkington is 3-0 all-time against the Crimson Storm. In the 3-2 win last year,
Betsy Parmley drove in one of the Tiger runs and
Loren Beggs had a three-hit game. Every game FHSU and SNU have played against each other has been on a neutral site field, and that remains the same for this meeting.
Â
#15 Oklahoma Christian (4-1)
Fort Hays State is still in search of its first win ever against the Eagles. Oklahoma Christian has won all nine previous meetings with the Tigers, including a meeting last season by the score of 6-1.
Sarah Tiffany and
Betsy Parmley are both returners to the team this year that had hits in that meeting last year. Oklahoma Christian received a preseason national ranking of No. 15 and knocked off No. 2 ranked Augustana in its season opener. However, the Eagles were shutout in their next game against unranked Harding.
Â
Cameron (6-0)
Fort Hays State and Cameron meet for a 15
th time in FHSU's NCAA Division II history. The teams played a wild neutral site contest last year in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where the Aggies prevailed 13-11.
Loren Beggs and
Elise Capra both homered in that contest, and both collected two hits.
Jessica Espinoza also had a two-hit game. Cameron has won the last 10 meetings with FHSU, while FHSU won the first four back in 2004 and 2005. This will be the third straight meeting on a neutral field in Oklahoma between the teams.
Â
Midwestern State (0-0)
Midwestern State will be playing its first games of the 2022 season this weekend. The Mustangs were unable to travel to a tournament in Arkansas due to poor road conditions from winter weather a week ago. The Tigers and Mustangs are tied 2-2 in their NCAA Division II series history. Midwestern State won a meeting between the teams last year in Lubbock, Texas by a score of 4-3 in eight innings.
Sarah Tiffany had three hits in that game to go with two RBIs, while
Sara Breckbill had two hits and
Jessica Espinoza and
Betsy Parmley each had one.
