Hays, Kan. - Fleharty Family Field
Fort Hays State Softball will battle for a spot in the MIAA Tournament this weekend as it hosts Rogers State and Northeastern State in a pair of doubleheaders in Hays on Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 29-30) to close out the 2023 regular season. The Tigers are among a cluster of teams fighting for the final four spots in the conference tournament, which begins on Wednesday (May 3). FHSU enters the week at 29-20 overall and 11-11 in the MIAA.
Â
Four teams have punched their tickets to the MIAA Tournament going into the final week of regular season play. Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern are tied for the MIAA lead at 19-3, while Rogers State and Central Missouri are tied for third at 15-7. All four are mathematically clear of current ninth-place holder Missouri Western at 10-12.
Â
Fort Hays State enters the week in a tie for sixth in the MIAA standings with Emporia State and Pittsburg State. Emporia State has two more conference games played than both FHSU and PSU, sitting at 12-12 in the conference. ESU has just one doubleheader this week, wrapping its season with current fifth-place resident Washburn. FHSU and PSU each have four games to play this week, sitting at 11-11. An FHSU doubleheader sweep of Pittsburg State earlier this year may loom large in the chase for the final spots in the conference tournament. However, lurking behind FHSU and PSU is Missouri Western, just one game back at 10-12. Northeastern State (9-13) and Nebraska-Kearney (7-15) enter the week barely alive in the conference tournament picture and play each other on Saturday.
Â
The Tigers face 2022 national champion Rogers State on Saturday (Apr. 29), which enters the week at 38-9 overall and 15-7 in the MIAA. Then on Sunday (Apr. 30) the Tigers will close out the regular season facing Northeastern State, which enters the week at 27-20 overall and 9-13 in the MIAA. Live stream and stats will be available for both doubleheaders.

There are seven teams with at least 30 wins, which is the most 30-win teams in the conference since it expanded to 14 schools. The only other year the conference had at least 11 of 14 teams with 20 or more wins overall was the 2017 season, but four of those 11 finished with records under .500 overall.
